An Entrepreneurial Legend: Philz Coffee

Philz Coffee
3101 24th St at Folsom St.
The Mission, San Francisco
The thing about Philz is that this caffeine wimp can participate in the trendy frenzy for handcrafted coffee without ruining my whole day. While other coffee-snob hangouts ignore the decaf option altogether, Philz always stocks at least 3 just-as-good-as-the-real-stuff decaf options. And that’s worth a lot to me.
Besides, I’ve been coming to Philz since way before it was cool, since before it was a coffee palace. Heck, I used to buy cigarettes, beer, and bulghur in bulk from Phil.
He rolled his eyes at me when I pointed this out to him the other day during a not-so-rare in-house sighting. “I’m the only business owner in San Francisco ever to give up my liquor license!” he brags. “And Lotto too!” he shouts. “We don’t need that anymore.”
Phil is a legend on 24th Street and in the San Francisco small business community. This shop’s where it all started. It’s a great place to hang out, one of my favorite writing spots in the city, and the only place where I can get a cup of coffee that truly suits me.

I walk by a neon-lit restaurant with a lot of website pages printed and taped hastily into one of its windows. I stop to read the mess: something to do with Yelp reviews. Scrawled words declare: We won't do business with thugs! I raise an eyebrow at the guy who's just joined me from inside. "Wanna take a picture? Go ahead! I'm not ashamed! Yelp is a bunch of gangsters!"

Brainwash isn't really a very good place to write. The loud music gets downright aggressive sometimes. The tiny unstable tables rock around, making it hard to work. Chairs and benches cram the space with uncomfortable chaos.
But you might end up here any ...
